Description

What is it?

TAIPEI Studio Tape Recorder is the start of our journey to what could be the most true and dynamic tape-in-the-box effect for the masses.

TAIPEI [Rev. B] is a reel to reel plugin made to deliver strong analogue character to your mixes in the form of a 16 track 2” tape machine for the tracks and a stereo track 1/4” tape machine for the master buss. The long process of sampling, listening, testing and studying, helped the London Acoustics team to isolate all their preferred sections of each different tape machine and compose them back into a single plugin.

What makes TAIPEI Studio Tape Recorder so special?

In the making of TAIPEI, we focused strongly on accurate recreation of that awesome original ‘tapey’ sound in order to move on (or back) from the “coolness” of digital recordings. We mean those unique magnetic, analogue (non-linear) dynamics, enriched with that fluid-but-never-harsh variable saturation, including some light distortion that usually comes through from the repro head.

Every magical aspect of Taipei is mutually dependant on the frequencies and dynamics of the source. We started sampling a single machine, but due to having a little more time on our hands than usual, we decided to go ‘beyond’, creating instead the sound we had always dreamed of; the sound that was missing from our arsenal. Of course, we highly respected the nature of the original machine, but we found that the possibility to sculpt and personalise each single characteristic of the tape sound might be a novel and welcome feature. We also added a noise reduction stage into the mix.

We believe TAIPEI STUDIO TAPE RECORDER can easily become your new tape plugin reference point.

What is TAIPEI best used for?

The TAIPEI plugin is designed to make your mix, from single tracks to the master-buss and the mastering process, sound absolutely convincingly “taped”. As in, painting a beautiful layer of ‘analogue lacquer’ over the top of your tracks.

Great tape for almost all applications. Very good on the mixbus or master for non-bass-heavy music. The workflow is clean and easy to learn and the sound is superb.

So… I was using the Zulu tape sim for the past year, which was the nearest thing I could get to the sound of tracking to tape from back in the early 00’s.. and it wasn’t even remotely close, really. There was no tape compression to speak of, apart from as a byproduct of clipping the unit. Nothing like tape compression. No VST sims quite did it for me either, including UAD, Acustica Taupe, IK etc… apart from Taipei. It is absolutely unmatched in software, and better than the RND and Zulu sims at actually sounding like tape. It’s fiddly to setup, and takes a while to really get a handle on the sweet spots, but apart from that, it literally has no rivals apart from the ATS1.

This is simply the best tape plugin ever. I used to like IK Multimedia Tape Collection and Softube Tape. Taupe by Acustica Audio wasn’t bad at all, but it has so many options that is easy to get lost. Taipei is that tape plugin you are looking for years and couldn’t find ’cause there is nothing like this! Sounds great, looks cool and it’s easy to aperate.

I’m really happy to share these words:
It’s done, I’m not going to search about new tape plugin releases. Checkmate for London Acoustics! Thank you so much 🙂

  4. Matt Roling

This is the best tape plugin ever. I stoped using IK Multimedia Tape Collection and Softube Tape insteantly. Taupe was an interesting option too, but there are so many configurations that we lost a lot of time only adjusting…

Honestly, the next step for Taipei is the real tape, ’cause there is no plugin that can bring this “tape sauce” the way Taipei can.

  5. Jay Swartzfeger

Nothing comes close to Taipei, not even the excellent offerings from AA and IK. Resource heavy but exceptional in every way.
